Farm Crew Lead/Market Crew-
Rolling interviews- flexible start date between mid-October and mid-November
We are seeking a very self-motivated and detail oriented individual to assist managers in leading our small farm crew of about 4 individuals. We run a small but very diverse farm with many crops and outlets, so this position will require always thinking ahead and of the bigger picture. It is very important that this individual be not only able to organize the crew, but also be able to maintain a fast pace to set the standard for crew work. This position is for the individual that wants to take the next step in pursuing a career in organic farming.
Crew Lead will be responsible for keeping tasks running efficiently throughout the week, and will work directly with farm managers to understand what the tasks for the day are and lead the crew to complete them. The crew leader will assist managers to make sure harvest, wash and pack is executed smoothly. The crew leader will lead various field tasks (such as flat sowing, transplanting, cultivation, crop care) while managers attend to other necessities. Often the crew leader will work alongside the crew under the direction of managers, but they must be able to take lead when needed, and be always looking out for anything that might be getting missed.
Part time for the winter season: mid October through late April: 15-24 hours/week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.
Full time for the summer season: late April through mid October: 38-42 hours/week, we work Monday-Friday in the shoulder seasons, Tues-Sat during summer market season (Jun-Sep).
Starting wage $22-$24 DOE
Overtime paid at time and a half past 40 hrs/week.
$150 gear stipend
Limit of 3 Personal Days off (paid or unpaid) during main-season (June-Sep), not including sick time, approved in advance. Extended vacations will generally not be approved during the main growing season.
Lots of veggies and a dozen eggs/week
Season completion bonus paid out every November (5-10% of Gross Wages)
PTO benefits accruing at 1hr/30hrs worked.
Annual cost of living adjustments and performance based raises.
Primary Tasks:
Understand our many farm systems and be able to communicate how to carry them out with fellow crew members
Motivate the crew to maintain pace, focus, and positivity
Run the pack line and quality control produce coming in while packing produce correctly for its intended destination, while communicating with the crew to keep everything running well.
Lead the crew through sowing, transplanting, cultivation, trellising, and other common field tasks. Be able to answer questions or find the answer when needed.
Work alongside the crew during harvest and lead with focus, speed and professionalism.
Work one Farmer’s Market per week during the first season, continued market shifts available in future seasons but not required.
Qualifications:
MUST HAVE at least two seasons working full-time on a commercial, production vegetable farm, references required
Must be legally able to work in the United States (citizen or current visa, we are not able to accomadate H-1B or H-2A visas)
Intention to stay for at least two seasons if it is a good fit.
Leadership experience preferred, must demonstrate strong leadership qualities.
Ability to lift 40-50 pounds and work bent over for extended periods of time.
Must be able to commit to the main season (Apr-Nov) and preferable part-time winter work as well.
Must be a detail oriented self-starter. This position requires a lot of thought and focus, we will train you for all tasks but you must take initiative to ask questions when needed and think about the crew as a whole in addition to the task you’re doing.
Ability to set a consistent example of a fast pace, especially during harvest, through whatever weather and challenges we encounter.
Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and remain positive with the crew when things become challenging.
Strong communication skills, both with managers and teammates and commitment to developing strong working relationships.

Join us in the field to plant, weed, harvest, wash and pack our certified organic produce. Due to the nature of our small and diversified vegetable farm in Terrebonne (25 miles north of Bend, Oregon) we expect our crew to be proficient and efficient in many tasks. We will provide training for all tasks, but there’s a lot to learn on a diversified farm so attention to detail and commitment to improving speed and quality of work are key. We are primarily a market farm and our full-time crew members generally alternate working either Wednesday or Saturday markets May-Oct. We feel that crew participation in markets makes the work we do on farm more rewarding and meaningful, and also provides a nice work balance. Crew members are expected to work well with others as well, as well as individually, during the summer we are a small tight-knit crew of 6-7.
Primary Tasks:
Harvest- During the main part of our season, the majority of our time is taken up by harvesting, washing and packing produce. We generally harvest most of the morning, come into the barn to wash and pack the produce, and then often go back out in the afternoon to get ‘fruits’ like tomatoes and peppers. We require our team to be efficient and focused especially during this time. We move quickly through many tasks, but there is also repetition.
Farmer’s Market- this position will attend either Wednesday or Saturday market at least every other week. Meeting at the Farm or at Markets is flexible, depending on where the employee lives. Will be responsible to help with setting up and breaking down the market booth, maintaining produce display, helping customers and keeping everything running smoothly regardless of conditions. Markets are a lot of fun, but are very busy at the beginning and weather can be hot, cold, wet, or windy—we sell produce through it all.
Farm tasks: Cultivation (weeding), Transplanting, Pruning, Trellising, Crop Removal, and Crop Care are all tasks we do on a regular basis.
Leadership roles/specialties are available for crew members that show interest in various aspects of the farm.
Qualifications:
Agricultural experience preferred but not required. Experience working manual labor and/or in the service industry is also great. Farming is hard work and you must be prepared for that!
Ability to lift 40-50 pounds and work bent over for extended periods of time, in any type of weather.
Must be able to commit to the full season.
Ability to work efficiently with teammates and also independently. Maintaining consistent pace is imperative in production work.
Strong communication skills are necessary to keep our team on the same page.
Excellent attention to detail and willingness to focus and learn. We will train you on all tasks but expect you meet quality and efficiency standards, as harvest lists for market days are long!
Positive attitude is key, because a negative one can bring the team down when things get hard, hot or cold.
Proficiency at mental math to tally harvest numbers and basic orders at farmers markets

We attend the Bend Downtown Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays and NW Crossing Market on Saturdays. Help us set up, sell produce to our community, and pack up the stand.
